Innovative sustainable thinking
Quattro Design Architects were selected by Gloucestershire County Council to design the refurbishment of their high profile Gloucester City Centre offices.
The multi-million pound project undertaken by Kier Construction included a complete over-cladding of the 1960’s buildings located within the historic heart of Gloucester. The adaption of the existing cellular offices transformed Shire Hall into a highly flexible working environment with additional conference and cafe facilities.
The project sought to maximise the energy efficiency of the buildings by significantly improving thermal performance and airtightness of the buildings whilst enhancing natural daylight and passive ventilation. This approach follows Quattro’s Philosophy for ‘Getting the Basics Right’.
Greater energy efficiencies were then sought through the incorporation of extensive Photovoltaic Panels to the roofs in addition to the use of Building Integrated Photo Voltaic Panels (BIPV’s) built into the external walls of the buildings. These BIPV’s mark one of the early uses of this technology in the UK putting Shire Hall at the forefront of innovative sustainable thinking.
