A building to make a real difference

Quattro Design Architects were commissioned by the Chamwell Trust to design a new state-of-the-art and groundbreaking therapies facility within the grounds of The Milestone Special School, Gloucester.

The new £5.1 million facilities will enhance the lives of those with a disability. Providing an unrivalled range of services that improve their well-being, physical fitness, and social interaction whilst having a positive impact on how they feel about their lives as a whole.

The centre will:

  • Make exercise, therapy, sport, leisure, social contact and work experience fully accessible to pupils of The Milestone School and the Gloucestershire community, no matter how challenging their physical needs or mental disability.
  • Replace an ageing hydrotherapy pool at The Milestone School with a new hydrotherapy resource that has the highest standards of water quality and temperature control, professional aquatics teachers and physiotherapists on hand. It will also have an eight bay non-ambulant changing area with dual hoisting, ambulant changing facilities, a poolside therapy and consultation room and the latest sensory equipment and teaching aids.
  • Rrovide additional facilities for fun, exercise, and imaginative play including soft play, rebound therapy, a climbing wall, trampolining gym, outdoor play facilities, multi-ability athletics and rugby and wheelchair sports.
  • Rrovide a fully accessible café, atrium and meeting space for relaxation, social opportunities as well as work experience and space for young enterprise projects.
  • Rrovide a multi-purpose area for therapies and medical consultations, meeting and teaching spaces in a holistic environment. These will be delivered by doctors, nurses, therapists, special yoga practitioners, pre-school specialists and support groups for families coping with autism, challenging behaviours and specific health issues.
  • Welcome everybody in the Gloucestershire community who needs its special services, including users of the local authority ‘Short Breaks’ programme.

It is without a doubt that the new Chamwell Centre will transform the lives of disabled children and adults across Gloucestershire.
